”The House” | Own a dream village house in Armenia

The story of Karaberd

We are five friends who met each other when volunteering with Birthright Armenia. Common interests, strong friendship, and a shared passion for positive change brought us even closer. The five of us found a house in the village of Karaberd located in Lori Province—not to confuse it with the one in Shirak. Only a two-hour drive from Yerevan, the dwelling was nestled in a verdant land boasting striking views of the nearby grand mountains. We decided to buy it and make it a livable space.

The quaint home has a lovely garden. Fruit saplings and old-growth walnut trees enrich the greenery—the garden itself is a fantastic camping spot. Coming here is quite the experience; you embark on a journey to be completely isolated from the hustle and bustle. Here, you are one with nature.

In order to fulfill our dreams and make this house a rural paradise, the house is in dire need of serious construction which costs a lot of money. Between the five of us, we still require proper funding to transform this house into a homey residence. Now, you might think, why would we want to donate money to five people to build a house? The answer is—it’s also going to be yours.

Become an occupant now

The goal of this project is not only for people to own a village house; it’s to encourage them to come and spend time in towns and villages that rather go unnoticed. We want to build a community of people who take joy in being in the great outdoors, in the heart of nature—we all get to have a place to stay in that’s not Yerevan, Dilijan, or Tsakhkadzor.

This project is aimed at revitalizing ghost towns and villages in Armenia, starting with Karaberd. We’re collecting funds to renovate a two-story building in the village. Whoever donates $250 (or more) becomes an occupant of the house. Being an occupant means you get to stay at the house whenever you want, as long as you want, for as many times as you want.

Imagine having to pay only $250 to “own” a house to stay in whenever you’d like. Instead of spending it on new things, why not invest it in becoming an occupant and a part of the movement to build a community?

Another question arises: if hundreds of people donate, how will they all fit into this house? No, it’s not impossible. There’ll be a calendar for people to mark the days they want to spend in the house. You’ll have to specify when, for how long, how many people, and every other required detail. To host a reasonable amount of occupants simultaneously, five safari tent-style bedrooms will surround the building. This way, you have more privacy and take advantage of all the space around you.

We did the math and came to understand that $50,000 is the amount we need to transform this house into a blissful home. Upon reaching our target, the construction will begin immediately and completed in the span of five months. All you have to do is become a part of the initiative.

The minimum amount to donate in order to become an occupant is $250. When donating on behalf of multiple people, please include their names. For example, if you’re a family of four, you’ll be donating $1,000 and mentioning the names of all four family members. However, anything less than $250 will be regarded as an act of kindness to help boost the project.

Future homes in other towns

Once we’ve completed the first house, we plan to scout for other villages to implement the same project there. By building new residences in overlooked villages and disregarded ghost towns, we’ll not only motivate others to join us, but we’ll also bring these areas back to life. The more times you donate, the more houses you’ll have at your disposal all over Armenia. And with more houses in different locations, there’ll be more flexibility and availability in the future.

Thanks to this project, not only will we be shedding more light on these overlooked areas, but we’re also encouraging people to go there and restore their former glory.  We’re building a community and putting these ghost towns in Armenia back on the map. We’re making people look past Yerevan, Dilijan, and Tsakhkadzor, and showing them that there’s more to Armenia.

In the long run, you’re saving tons of money by investing only $250 for a village home.  In the process, you’re building a community along with the other occupants and putting these Armenian villages back on the map—all while enjoying a peaceful retreat in your new home.

These houses make the perfect place to create happy memories with your family, embark on adventures with your friends, and spend quality time with your special someone. Whether you wish to host your birthday weekend, take a break from the bustling city, or even start a summer camp for kids, your journey starts at Karaberd.
