What is an Unknown Device In Device Manager?

When viewing device information in Device Manager, you may see some devices listed as “Unknown Devices“. It may be difficult to determine the cause of this unknown device because there are several indications of what device it was produced by. In this article, you will get a full idea of what is an Unknown Device In Device Manager and how to fix it.

Mostly Windows can detect all the drivers for its device. Unfortunately, when Windows cannot recognize the hardware and provide drivers for it, the unknown device will show up in the Windows Device Manager.

The unknown device is not just unknown – it cannot work until the correct driver is installed.

Such devices are often referred to as “unknown devices,” but sometimes they have more descriptive names. For our purposes, the difference is irrelevant. While we can see the device name, Windows doesn’t know what it is, and we don’t know exactly what driver we need it for. So, we have to figure out for which we are facing this issue.

Step 2. Find out the Unknown Device’s Hardware IDs

Now let’s identify the device. Right-click the Unknown Device and select Properties to view more information. Next click on the Details tab there you will see the defective device’s ID. Follow the below steps-

Windows will inform you it doesn’t have the appropriate drivers — that’s error code 31.

Click the Details tab, and select Hardware Ids in the list. Windows will display a lot of other information about the device here, but the Hardware Ids will help you identify the device. What is an Unknown Device In Device Manager

You’ll usually see a list of long strings of characters here. They’re actually unique hardware IDs that correspond to the hardware.

Perform a web search for the hardware ID using your favorite search engine. You should find the name of the piece of hardware associated with the unknown device, and that will give you the information you need to hunt down the driver. You may need to download the device driver from a trusted source.

Step 3. Install the Driver

You can now hunt down the driver for the hardware device and install it normally. You shouldn’t have to mess with the Device Manager here — just install the driver using the standard installer and it should work, That’s all.

METHOD. 2

Step 1. Automatically Identify Devices and Install Drivers

Windows is smart enough so windows try to automatically install the drivers, find the appropriate drivers, and then download them from Windows Update. Windows want to recognize the hardware and install drivers, so you don’t have to do this. If this feature is disabled somehow, you may encounter a large number of unknown devices problem.

To check whether this feature is enabled or disabled, open the Control Panel and click View devices and printers under Hardware and Sound. Right-click the device that represents your computer itself and selects Device installation settings.

After enabling this setting, click the Update Driver button in a device’s properties window in Device Manager.
